Speechless… I was and I am!

If the teacher documents that the student spelled it as PEEKOK, what can the poor student do?

If a 2nd grade student is asked to spell the word ‘Peacock’ in an oral test at school and the student spells it as PEACOCK, yet the teacher documents that the student spelled it as PEEKOK and passes on the results for the final calculation, what can the poor student do?

Well, I am not too sure if I have been able to draw the analogy correctly, but here’s the real story:

A few days ago, I had an exploratory employment discussion with the HR Rep of a company. A week later, I got to know that a couple of my responses to the questions she asked were wrongly captured and passed on further as a feedback. The captured responses were exactly the opposite of what I had actually said during the interview.

There’s a possibility that my responses may have been misinterpreted or were not properly understood. For ease, let’s even assume that I wasn’t able to communicate my responses appropriately.

Anyway, fortunately, I was referred to this role by someone known and the person who referred me called me up to seek clarification, as there was a huge disconnect between the discussion I had with her earlier and the responses she received from the recruiter! I gave whatever clarifications were required to be given and we moved on!

My point here being… In the above case, there was someone who knew me and sought clarifications to make necessary corrections to the feedback. This will most likely not be the case in the usual search-apply-interview scenarios, since no one may ever reach out for clarifications and the profile may outright get disqualified. Soon, you may receive a templated email informing you about your rejection (in some cases, no feedback or you may even get ghosted, etc.)

Also, to be fair, there’s no one to blame here. This could be a simple human error, but we never know how badly this is affecting the applicant; someone could be a real value-add to the Sales team, but unfortunately got disqualified because of the feedback from the exploratory round. Imagine losing out on a great resource!

Your thoughts?

Are you aware of any Video Interview platform which has a solution to eliminate such human errors?
I have an Idea (and in my head at least), it’s a really good one.

Ok, now thoughts? 🙂
